A new melon website is online since a few weeks, this one is dedicated to the late Shannon Hoon and ran by Randall Peenk, a cool melonhead from Orlando, FL. I recently got in touch with Randall to know more about him and his plans for ShannonHoon.com.
“Right now it’s in it’s infant stage awaiting input from the fans as far as idea’s, artwork, etc. In the near future we will be adding a widget for people to donate to the vigil… It’s up to the Melonheads of the world to make it something we all can be proud of” he says.
“I registered shannonhoon.com right after seeing a commercial for the Behind the Music special. At the time, celebrity names were being bought up left and right for use by porn sites and the like. So, I wanted to protect it. To sort of do a favor for Shannon so to speak. I also thought Nico might want it someday“ says Randall.
Several people from the Blind Melon Forum encouraged him to use the domain to build him a proper site. With the help of Neil Shultz from gorockfest.com, Randall finally go it off the ground in January.
Randall is an early Blind Melon fan: “…I’ve been into the Melon since I first saw the video to No Rain. I rushed out the next day and bought the cassette and was instantly captivated. I was about 18 at the time and had a real positive outlook on the music coming out during that time, due mostly to Blind Melon as well as the grunge movement…” he says.
Randall was lucky enough to see Blind Melon twice in the 90’s. “… the first time was in 1993 when they opened for Lenny Kravitz. It was such an awesome show. I was at the front of the right side of the stage. Shannon grew visibly aggravated by some youngsters moshing and crowd surfing to the left, so he came and stood right in front of me and my friends. He proceeded to play change, and it was just beautiful. As the band started the next song (can’t recall what it was) I remember Shannon saying “While the band gets this song going, I’m gonna test out some of your local”, and began hitting a big bowl of weed, right in front of at least a dozen cops that sorrounded the stage. It’s good the be king I guess! I also saw them the next year at Woodstock 94. A great show as well, though not as intimate with such a large crowd…”
